Local group Open Media goes global to protect the Internet

Vancouver-based Open Media has taken on challenges to Internet freedom in Canada, and now it’s ready to take on the world.

The group launched its Connected Future Fund at a private residence on Tuesday after first getting involved with global threats to Internet freedom in June when they launched a petition to oppose the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP) trade agreement, which includes Canada and which is currently in its 15th round of closed door negotiations in New Zealand. Trans Mountain hosts community sessions on pipeline expansion

Trans Mountain was in Vancouver recently to consult with the public and share information about its proposed pipeline expansion.

Kinder Morgan’s Trans Mountain 1,150-kilometre pipeline currently transports about 300,000 barrels per day and the proposed expansion would expand that to 750,000 by “twinning” the existing pipeline. Read more…

West Van residents concerned about pipeline plan

Residents of Kitsilano and West Point Grey are among those concerned about the expansion of oil pipelines and tanker traffic in the Burrard Inlet.

About 250 residents attended a town hall meeting at St. James Hall on Tuesday, July 24, for a meeting hosted by the Wilderness Committee, Tanker Free BC and the Point Grey Foreshore Protection Society. Read more…

YVR rolls out plans for discount designer outlet

Getting a deal on designer duds may not require a trip across the border soon, as the Vancouver Airport Authority’s plans to build an outlet mall get underway.

Vancouver viaduct plan to bring traffic back down to earth

City staff were out in the community last week showing off plans for the take down of the Georgia and Dunsmuir Street viaducts and revitalization of the area.
